Self-Help for a Depressed Teenager
Help Yourself When Others Are Not Around
At one point in our lives, things become too overwhelming that we can’t see any light beyond our problems. But, we also look for ways, and ask for the help of other people, so that we can get over these things. But when you get to the point that you are thinking about committing suicide or harming yourself, then you should seek for help immediately. Here are some suggestions that can help you get through until you are ready to talk it out with someone else.
- Think positive. If there is no solution now, there will be one later. Any given problem has a given solution, but you just can’t get it to stay in your hands for now. You have to wait for a couple of days before you can see it clearly.
- You are not a bad person when you have thought of hurting yourself or other people. When you are depressed, you tend to think way beyond what you used to do. You are not to be judged because of this. Instead, you should be understood that you are not acting yourself at the moment.
- When your feelings seem to be uncontrollable, tell yourself to wait for another 24 hours before you get into action. The additional 24 hours you are giving to yourself will give you ample time to think of things over and over again. This way, you can assess if you are really doing the right thing or not. During this time also, find someone whom you can talk to. Try talking to a friend or better yet, your parents.
- If you can’t control yourself, find company. Being alone increases the risk that you will commit suicide. Stay with your friends, your parents, in public places, anywhere where there are other people who can see you to avoid harming yourself.
When You Can’t Help Yourself, Ask Others to Do So
An adage says, “No man is an island.” No matter how hard you try to be independent, at this point in time, you are still dependent on your parents and significant others. Asking for help is not a shameful thing to do. Rather, it is one way of proving that you are a person capable of living on your own but also considering the value of other people around you. This will be appreciated by other people since you recognize that they are there to give you a hand when you need one. You will not be ridiculed for this, instead, other people would be happy to help you.
When you are depressed, never isolate yourself for this will give you the chance to think about harming yourself or ending your life. Try to wake up every morning and look for something that you should accomplish for the day. When you are ready to talk, your friends, especially your parents are always there for you. Sometimes, they just need you to reach out to them. One of the reasons why they don’t confront you is because they think that you might be offended. So they are just there, waiting for you to talk and to share what you are currently feeling.
Your parents are the people who can understand you. You are their child, so they will listen and talk to you. They are also the ones who will be with you when you go to the doctor, when you receive your treatment. Do not shut yourself out from your parents for this would hurt them very much.
