Increasing the Likelihood that Depressed Adolescents Get Help

Teenage adolescent is becoming very common but the rate at which treatment is being given is still very low. Awareness, on the part of the depressed teen, the parents, the teachers, and other people involved in the care of the individual is very important. Presented below are some tips to increase the likelihood that depressed teens get help.

For the Teen

As a teen who is depressed, you are the first person who should know that the signs and symptoms you are feeling, are already leading to depression. You should be aware of the signs of depression so that you will know when you should ask for help.

When you are feeling depressed, always ask for help – from your parents, friends, teacher, or anyone whom you think can help you. Talk it out with that someone, and ask what you can do for your depression. Asking help will not be a sign of weakness, it is a sign that you are strong enough to handle what you are having right now. Instead of isolating yourself, go out with your friends, go to school, and stay with your parents. Isolation will just worsen what you feel, it will not be of any help.

Always choose what is healthy. This goes true regarding your diet and activities. Eat healthy foods to maintain your health. Nutritious foods are known to have a positive effect on the mood and behavior so make sure you eat these ones. Doing an exercise routine increases the level of endorphins in the body, which are responsible for happiness. Exercise can be taking a walk, riding your bike, or other activities.

Talking to your parents when you are not feeling well is very important. Even if your parents are very busy, you will be their very first concern. They will always make sure that you are doing well. Your parents love you, and what you tell them matters. Once you talked to them about how you feel, then they would definitely find ways on how to help you. Their work is important, but you weigh much more to them so you come in first.

For the Parents and Significant Others

A depressed teen does not talk most of the time. As the person then who is around the teen most of the time, then you should be the one who will notice the odd changes in behavior that the ten has been showing. Once you have noticed these changes, and upon observation that it has been happening for quite some time already, then you should talk to the person to check if something is wrong. Talking should be done in a way that the teen will not feel probed and in the end would tell you the truth.

Staying with the depressed teen is also very important. Their changes in behavior may cause you to be hurt but keep in mind that the teen is the one who is suffering much more. The teen is acting out of character and during the normal days, the teen would not want things to be this way. Instead of turning your back and leaving the depressed teen, stay with your child/friend during this very difficult moment. Offer love and support for these are two things that a depressed teen needs the most. And most importantly, talk to the depressed teen about getting professional help. This way, you can be assured of the recovery from that situation.
